Step-by-step instructions on how to set up your email software are available here.


MS Outlook ExpressMS Outlook

The options above should offer help on most of the major email packages in use. However standard mail server addresses for other packages are as follows:

Incoming (POP3) Mail Server: maf.or.ug
Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server: maf.or.ug



Outlook Express Setup Guide


  1. Click on Start and then Outlook Express. On the toolbar click on Tools and then Accounts from the pull-down menu.






  2. Select Add and then Mail.






  3. You'll then be asked to enter a name (e.g. your own name or a company name). Click Next.






  4. Now add your email address and click Next.






  5. You'll now be presented with a screen asking you to confirm your incoming and outgoing email servers. Make sure that you select your incoming email server as POP3.






  6. You'll then need to state your incoming and outgoing email servers. Complete these as follows:



    Server Information:

    Incoming mail server (POP3) is maf.or.ug

    Outgoing mail server (SMTP) is maf.or.ug


    Fill the 'Username' field with your username - the one that you chose when you subscribed.

    Fill the Account name field with your account username. Fill the Password field with the password that you selected during signup. (You will not be able to see it as you type, it will appear asterisked).




  7. Click on Next and you will be taken to the Mail Logon Screen. Enter your MAF username and password. Important Your username will be all lowercase letters, your password is case sensitive. Make sure these are correct, if they are wrong you won't be able to get your email. Note that Secure Password Authentication should not be ticked. Click Next.






  8. The congratulations screen will now appear. Click on Finish to complete setup.






  9. You’re now ready to send and collect your email.

Microsoft Outlook Setup Guide


If you have Microsoft Office installed, you may prefer to use Microsoft Outlook for sending and receiving email. Use the following guide to help you setup most versions of Outlook.


  1. From the main menu, choose Tools and then E-mail Accounts.

    (* If your version of Outlook has simply 'Accounts' listed (Office 2000), please follow the instructions about how to set up Outlook Express).





  2. Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.






  3. Select POP3 as your server type and click Next.






  4. Enter these settings into the appropriate fields in the screen shown below.


    (1) Enter your name as you wish it to be viewed by the people to whom you send your email.

    (2) The "E-mail Address" is in the format alias@maf.or.ug

    - where 'alias' is the email alias that you wish to use (for example your first name), and username is the username that you chose when you signed up.
    If your organisation has registered and hosted a domain on your MAF UG account you may wish to enter alias@yourdomain.or.ug as your email address (replacing your own domain name of course!).


    Server Information:

    (3) Incoming mail server (POP3) is maf.or.ug

    (4) Outgoing mail server (SMTP) is maf.or.ug

    (5) The "User Name" field should be filled with your username - the username that you chose when you subscribed.

    (6) The password field should be filled with the password that you selected on signup but note that you will not be able to see it as you type (it will appear asterisked).


    When you have finished entering these settings, click on the More Settings button.







  5. In the 'More Settings' menu, go to the Outgoing Server tab and ensure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is NOT selected. Then click OK and you will be returned to the previous menu. Click Next to continue.





  6. Click Finish to complete setting up your mail settings.





  7. You are now ready to send and collect your email!
